Walker service dogs balance their partners so they do not need a cane or a walker.
The service dog also must be trained to help their partner off the floor if they should fall.

Jean Levitt, President, AWCA and her partner, Gentleman Cole, in the New York City MTA system.  Cole is a walker dog, among his other talents, and was certified by K9 Service Dogs of New Jersey in 1992 before the Federal ADA laws made this unnecessary.

A large breed of dog should be used for this type of work, such as:

German Shepherd

Rottweiler

Golden Retriever

bullet

Labrador Retriever

bullet

Collie

bullet

Other large breeds have been successfully trained for wheelchair service,
but these are among the most common ones used for this purpose
